The Basic Oxygen Furnace(BOF) steelmaking slag's accurate automatic detection is a problem to be solved urgently in the domestic steel industry. The BOF is the most important and efficient steel-making method in the world. However, in order to remove other impurities in the molten iron in the steel-making process, oxygen blowing and raw materials adding are needed for melting, therefore the molten steel and slag are generated. But if there's excess slag in the motlen steel, the quality of the motlen steel will be influenced. So accurate automatic slag detection has important significance for the improvement of the steel quality and the reduction of production cost.In view of the present situation of the BOF's slag detection, a new slag detection method which is based on the infrared radiation is presented. In this stduy, the research purpose is to satisfy the BOF's real-time automatic detection, and specific designs of the system are achieved. The system contains several modules: controlling module, video-capturing module, image-processing module, decision-making module and real-time displaying module. The camera is controlled by the controlling module to get the best shot, capture the slag images and send to the computer. The real-time video is captured by VFW video-capturing module, and processed by pseudo-color image enhancement and other image processing technology. Using the real-time displaying module to display some needed data in the software interface, and making the slag judgment by decision-making module at the same time in order to achieve the effect of real-time slag detection. The software and hardware is debugged and is used in the field experiment. The experimental results show that the slag detection system which is based on the infrared radiation is feasible, and satisfy the real-time slag detection and judgement.
