Phased array systems have many applications in both military and commercial communication systems. The retrodirective array has been of particular interest due to its cost effectiveness and compactness. A retrodirective array transmits a signal back to the interrogator's position without any a priori knowledge of the incoming angle or relying on sophisticated digital signal processing algorithms. The retrodirective array has many advantages such as simple structure, compact size, low cost and has other features in addition to self-phasing aspects. Therefore, the study of retrodirective array is an important direction in wireless communication system. The main work of this thesis is organized as follows: Firstly, the basic theories of the antenna array are summarized. Meanwhile, the technology of open stub loaded is adopted in the antenna design in order to design low mutual coupling dual-polarized antenna. This technology reduces the size of antenna, increases distance between radiation side of array elements, and reduces mutual coupling between array elements. Secondly, the principle of Van Atta retrodirective array is analyzed and this system is simulated in this dissertation. The sparse array technology is also applied to the retrodirective array to realize sparseness of the retrodirective array, so that the smaller amount of radiating elements and lower cost can be realized. Thirdly, the retrodirective array is combined with time-multiplexing technology to realize further reducing of RF elements of array and lower cost of the system. Fourthly, this dissertation analyzes the reason of Beam-Pointing Error (BPE). Basing on the characteristic of retrodirective array, compensation of BPE can be achieved by appropriate choice of the transmission frequency. Lastly, the RF front end of communication system is designed and a new phase recovery technique is presented to eliminate phase ambiguity.
