Andre and Leonard proposed the concept of retrodirective array in 1964, but until the late 90's in the last century it had caused for concern because of its unique application in wireless communication system. A retrodirective array transmits a signal back to the interrogator's position without any priori knowledge of the incoming signal, without relying on sophisticated digital signal processing algoritms, which has a fast reaction speed, and reduces the probability of being intercepted by unknown third party signal, increasing data security, these features make it have a very broad application prospects in military and civilian aspects.This article embarks from the concept and properties of retrodirective array, the basic theories of retrodirective array are briefly introduced, such as the background, the basic concepts, physical composition and so on. On the basic of summarizing and discussing the existing research results of the retrodirective array antennnas, we make it used in RFID system, which achieves the unique features and improves RFID system performance.First of all, this article has put forward a design method for retrodirective array antenna of X band. The simulation results show that the far-field antenna radiation patterns, standing wave ratio VSWR and isolation meet the communica-tion system requirements.Then, discussing the application of retrodirective array as reader antenna and tag antenna in RFID system, analysing the significant advantage for RFID system, at last, getting a method for retrodirective array used in RFID system including the key technologies for the designning.
