Rtp / Rtsp-based Iptv Set-top Boxes Avs Middleware Developed

IPTV transfers TV, video, text, picture and data through IP network, and offers secure, interactive, reliable and manageable multimedia service with QoS/QoE support. IPTV is not so popular in China currently as in Europe and America but a huge consumer market of IPTV is gestating since the number of broadband network users in our country is over 100 million now. Therefore, the main network service providers such as China Telecom, China Netcom etc. have already started promoting or testing IPTV service. Since one of the core key technologies of IPTV industry, video coding technology is monopolized by foreign companies and international standards (like MPEG series and ITU-T series), at the beginning of 2002 our state launched the project to establish Information Technology Advanced Audio and Video Coding standard series (abbreviate AVS standard) so that we can gain more independent intellectual property rights in IPTV and other multimedia industries.However only widely adopted and successfully implemented standards make sense. So this article stresses solution of transmitting AVS video over IP network, based on deep analysis of AVS standard. After a summary of existing technologies of real-time streaming media transmission in the world, we designed an AVS network transmitting middleware on RTP/RTSP, and applied it in embedded IPTV set top box. The main contents of this article include :Introduction of RTP, RTCP and RTSP protocols in detail. These protocols are recommended by ISMA (Internet Streaming Media Alliance) for real-time streaming media applications. RTP defines simple encapsulation of streaming media data, without error checking and loss packet retransmission. So it has high transmission efficiency, low delay, and it offers sequence number and timestamp for receiver to reconstruct and synchronize the data. RTCP is used to monitor the QoS of RTP data transmission. RTSP is for session control between client and streaming media server, its functions like a"network remote controller".Design and implementation of designed AVS-transmission middleware. Based on deep analysis of corresponding technologies, we discussed on how to use RTP to load AVS video and bring forward a RTP payload format for AVS video data and designed an AVS network transmitting middleware on RTP/RTSP, implemented it on IPTV set top box, and proved its feasibility through tests in AVS-IPTV system.
