As a newspaper of one hundred and fifty years history, sports section of The New York Times was consistently developed by many subjective and objective factors. It has become one of the best sports pages in American newspaper market. This dissertation attempts to summarize the operating method of sports section by its coverage of 2006 World Cup hosted in Germany, and also make analysis of its success on the basis of over one hundred years. Through quantitative analysis of the samples, this study focus on layout allocation, format design, and also put emphasis on reports' style and tune, discovering characteristics of sports section. In the last chapter, the dissertation sorts out existing problems of The New York Times, explores pros and cons of its sports section, provides guiding significance to the newspaper of our country. Then this could promote the prosperity of sports sections in our country.
