Museum Collections Management System Xml-based Development

At present a considerable number of museums eager to develop collection management system, but it is difficult to find ready-made application system which is continuing adapted to national cultural relics data standards. In this paper, with the opening, self-descriptive, interoperability and scalability advantages of XML technology, the system can be customized with cataloguing, functions, processes, and the interface, so that the collections management system can not only suitable to all types collections in all museums, also be adapted to museum with different scale of investment, in this cases, the value of the collection itself can be effectively preserved, and the method of museum collection protecting, using, and research can be pushed to a new level.After a brief review of the development trend of the museum collection management, the current status and problems of the museum collections management system are discussed, which make it clear that the new museum collection management based on the XML technique is of great value. Then, the main techniques of this system are introduced; the requirements and operation procedure of the system development in museum collection management are analyzed. Some applicable sub-systems, such as the metadata models, operate system platform and OAI framework are also discussed in detail, and then the architecture of the whole museum collection system is analyzed. Moreover, based on the XML technique, the XML expression of the museum collection and flexible configuration mechanisms are also discussed, then a customizable museum collection management system, which support the integrating heterogeneous resources is given. Finally, the application of this system is compared to some other similar systems, and the development trend of the Museum collection management with XML technique is pointed out.
