Train traction calculation plays an important role in the locomotive operation, the railway route selection, communication signals and railway transportation. With the more and more widespread application of computer network in railway transportation, locomotive running condition can be selected reasonably and the efficiency and technology level of the train traction calculation can be raised by developing a web-based software system for the train traction calculation.In this paper, the principle of train traction calculation is introduced, and the calculation methods about train traction force, traction characteristics and running resistance are analyzed and summarized. Furthermore, the calculation methods about unit resultant force in train traction, the train movement and running time are analyzed in detail. Some mathematical models for train traction calculation are summarized.On the basis of analyzing the software architecture based on the web services, the paper proposes a web-based software system structure for the train traction calculation, which adopts a smart client architecture. The web-based software system is composed of a smart client, a web service of traction calculation and a database for a train traction calculation. According to the principles of smart client software architecture, the paper works on the working mode, the overall structure and the database of the web-based software system for the train traction calculation.The web-based software system for the train traction calculation has been developed by Visual Studio. NET 2003 as the development tool, and .NET Framework as a platform for Web services. The paper describes in detail smart client technology, client data access technology and graphics drawing technology of the traction calculation, which are used in the software system. The developed software system can work in B/S mode, and the train traction parameters are input from a human-computer interface, and a web services component for train traction calculation is called. The calculation results include the resultant force curves, time curves and Excel report of the traction calculation. The running examples show this software system can meet the requirements for a train traction calculation, which is expected to play an important role on the web-based train traction calculation.
