In recent years, with rapid development of information industry, data services have made great strides. Technology of access networks is required, which is need to be economic , simple, scalable, and capable of delivering integrated voice, data, and video services to an end-user subscriber over signal network, so the PON technology was born. Thanks to efficiency, low equivalent cost and the ability to support all kinds of access services, the prospects of the GPON system are bright. Nowadays, the study of GPON system is one of the hottest topics in the access network's technology. This paper mainly deals with the GPON key technologies, related technique of GPON Optical Network Termination(ONT), and the design scheme, the major contents of the paper are as follows:Firstly, this paper introduces the development of PON, compares GPON with different types of PON, and analyses the advantages of GPON. Then, according to the GPON G984 recommendation, it analyses the ONT system's characteristic, and designes the ONT system.Secondly, the service types ONT supports was analysed, and the scheme for the TMD services and the Ethernet services was discussed. In addition, this paper researches the general hardware platform and designes the hardware circuit according to the analysis of the higher layer services. Then the choice of the core processor and the realization of the higher layer services was discussed, and a high performance design according to particular conditions was provided.Lastly, the key techniques of the higher layer services was analysed. The clock recovery methods suitable for the GPON system based on the clock recovery methods existed was provided. In addition, the dynamic bandwidth assignment MAC protocol for differentiated services over GPON was discussed.
