H.264 video coding standard is the new international video coding standard approved on May, 2003. By adopting a number of new coding technologies, it has achieved a significant improvement in compression performance and a "network-friendly" video representation relative to existing standards. While all these technologies increase the complexity of H.264 encoder thus restrict its real time application. So, research on the implement and optimization of H.264 based on DSP TMS320DM642 is significant to application of video technology on embeded system.This thesis mainly researches on H.264 key technology of video coding and its implement on TMS320DM642. First, some background knowledge on video compression technoglogy is presented. The development of international video compression standards is briefly introduced. Then the key techniques in H.264 is discussed. Furthermore, the three famous H.264 test models are introduced and tested, then X264 reference software is adopted as H.264 coder model. Further the discussion is focused on its encoding parameters and how they effect the coding speed and the image quality. Then, prediction module with high computational complexity is perfered to be optimized: an algorithm of fast INTRA mode decision is proposed, and its availability is demonstrated by means of table; an improved algorithm for INTER mode decision is presented, tested results show that it enhances the encoding speed effectively with slight PSNR drops. Finally, we choose DM642 video embeded system which is designed ourself as hardware platform, transplant H.264 basline profile encoder into TI DM642 and optimize it . Experimental results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the optimization. It can encode 15-29 yuv4:2:0 cif format viedo frame per second with high visual quality (qp=26).
