With the rapid development of millimeter-wave technology, it is applied in mm-wave radars, guidance, electronic countermeasure, mm-wave communication and remote sensing. Millimeter-wave frequency source is a key component in mm-wave circuit and system, whose performance directly affects the final performance of system.With the development of millimeter wave systems, the requirement on the performance of millimeter -wave frequency source is becoming higher, which is characterized by some features such as wider bandwidth, higher frequencies differentiate ratio, low phase noise and better spectrum pureness and spur control.In the beginning, this thesis introduce modern frequency synthesizer. Then this thesis introduce contribution to phase noise made by the various components of the PLL, including loop filter of PLL. Based on the analysis of frequeney synthesis technique, three schemes are discussed. Especially, the method of PLL with mixer is introduced. Then the phase noise relation among RF, LO and IF is carefully studied and pointed out by author.Phase noise is one of the most important performance indexes of frequency source. First, with the phase noise model of phase locked loop (PLL), the relation of the output signal phase noise with the loop configurations and the noise characteristics of all building blocks is analyzed. Next, with the requirements low phase noise characteristics, the scheme of two PLL is confirmed after analyzing and comparing of several configurations of mm-wave frequency synthesizer, then the specifications distribution, scheme design and specifications verification are processed.According to system solutions, author design the reasonable loop bandwidth of PLL. Finally through the EMC design of the layout and grounding, the request has been achieved by debugging all the whole circuits and programs time after time. The measured results show that, the mm-wave frequency synthesizer can output signal at the frequency range of 35~36GHz with step of 10MHz, and the phase noise performances in the above frequency range are better than -80dBc/Hz@1kHz .
