An Internet-based and easily manipulated Picture Archiving and Communication System is developed with the help of Java technology to accomplish the objective. It realizes the medical image communion in the hospital inner and between the hospital.It also realizes the image processing and writing medical records on-line.Materials and Methods This approach involves a Web server that allows the query and retrieval of images stored in a Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) archive. The images can be viewed inside a Web browser with use of a small Java program known as the Applet Viewer, which is executed inside the browser. This implement include several steps follows:(1) analyses the DICOM standard,realizes the acception of the images and storages them in the DBMS.(2)Using Tomcat for the Web Server to realize the analysis of the java codes.(3)using Struts and Hibernate frame to construct the system'structure. It realizes the MVC thinking. In this system ,using jsp to realize the view layer,sing JavaBean to realize the business layer,using Hibernate to realize the data accessing,using SQL Server2000 to realize the vast image date's storage.(4)The system is based on the B/S model.useing Java Applet embedded in the jsp to realize the image processing.from this to simplify the client,it needn't any special software in the client,using this to realize the information processing from the deficient place. (5)Using SQL language to realize the images retrieved and browse and write the processing information into DBMS.Results A Internet based Picture Archiving and Communication System was developed with the help of Java,struts and Hibernate technology, images retrieved from DICOM archive can be viewed and manipulated in the Web browser through the Internet.Using Java Applet embedded in the web browser,specialist from different hospitals can browse the image and process the image and write the medical record on line.Conclusion The system offers several advantages over more traditional picture archiving and communication systems (PACS):It is easy to install and maintain, is platform independent, allows images to be manipulated and displayed efficiently by using the Applet embedded in the Web browser, and is easy to integrate with existing systems that are already making use of Web technologies. The system can easily be used from outside the hospital if a security policy is in place.
