Metadata In A Data Warehouse Applications

Along with the development of the technology of the data warehouse, the role of metadata in data warehouse is increasing remarkably. Metadata has not only defined the role of data warehouse, depicted how to take out data and the change rule of data, clearly shown the location and the content of information in data warehouse, but also realized the management of data warehouse. Unfortunately most of the enterprises use the different data warehouse systems, most vendors of data warehouse adapt different metadata management solution which result in many difficulties when integrating and sharing data. In order to deal the problem, we need a standard can describe the warehouse system's inner- thing normally.The CWM was published for consolidating the strategy of metadata management. The main purpose of CWM is to enable easy interchange of warehouse and business intelligence metadata between warehouse tools, warehouse platforms and warehouse metadata repositories in distributed heterogeneous environment. CWM is made for warehouse only, so it is better than the other standard. We first introduce the architecture and makeup of CWM, then analyses and comprehend the content of all packages and their relation in detail.Based the comprehension on the CWM, the thesis stores warehouse's metadata with uniform format, and manages it normally by using CWM. And then we can share the metadata and make it easy interchange. The thesis proposes the metadata management strategy based on CWM and system's scheme after dissecting CWM deeply and analyzing the requirement of metadata management, and then develops the prototype system named Meta Management, The Meta Management applies the "Object Relational Mapping" technology to establish the Meta Store database based on the relational database, and resolves the mapping problem about CWM's classes, associations and inheritance ships. The thesis produce the structure of the Meta Management which contain the metadata's modeling tool, the metadata's management tool and the interface of the metadata. The metadata's modeling tool is designed to in order to support the visualization of modeling and collect the metadata, and develops the metadata's management tool in order to check the metadata, add the metadata, delete the metadata and update the metadata.
