The technology and mechanism of ultra lapping and polishing for PC (physical contact) optic fiber connectors are systematically researched in this paper, based on the important item of National Nature Science Foundation of China: Sub-micron Manufacture Theory and Its Key Technology. The main content includes:1 .The return loss induced mechanism of optical fiber connector and the influencing rules for each parameter to return loss are explored, and the specific approaches are put forward to advance the return loss of connector;2.The influencing mechanism and law for the ferrule end-face geometric parameters of optic fiber connector to tight contact and optic transmission performance of connectors are analyzed, and permitted ranges of ferrules end-face geometric parameters are educed;3.The motive principle, relative motive track and the influencing law of the motive parameters to the track are researched for the end-face lapping machine of the optic fiber connector, and the even polishing mechanism are analyzed on this foundation. The optimal results of motive parameters of the lapping machine are obtained with the aid of lapping velocity, lapping efficiency, lapping quality and even abrasion of the lapping film, which lays the foundation for the research of the influence for the track curve on the process precision, the selection of the motive track and the optimizing of the motive parameters, which also provides foundation for the improvement of the process precision of the optic fiber connector.4.A serial of lapping and polishing experiment for the end-face of the optic fiber connector are carried out. The influencing law of different lapping and polishing conditions to the connector end-face geometric parameters of optic fiber connector and the optic transmission performance (return loss and insertion loss) is researched respectively with lapping films made of diamond, Al2O3, and SiO2. An effective lapping and polishing technics is put forward to improve the performance of the optic fiber connector. 5.The end-face microcosmic shape under different polishing conditions are tested, the material removal mode and the polishing process mechanism are analyzed for the end-face polishing of the optic fiber connector and the fact is found that there are three types of material removal mode, namely, brittle fracture mode, semi-brittle & semi-ductile mode, and ductile mode.
