Integrated Circuit card (also named Smart Card), is invented by Roland Moreno in early 1970s. IC card has the merit of small size, special protection methods, advanced IC techniques, and difficulty in cracking and copying. From the birth of it, it has prevailing in many industry and application, such as finance, transport, medical, marketing, and etc. As kernel of the smart card techniques, developments of COS are restricted in chip capacity, storage and CPU speed. It is hard to achieve the goal of high robustness, high speed and best security ensuring. However, perfect architecture and model designing, optimized algorithm are difficult in developing COS directly on Chip platform. And it is also not easy to perform fully function and robust testing work.From the view of assisting the COS development, it is necessary to set up a simulated Smart Card environment, to achieve the goal of COS prototype design. The simulated COS can also introduce the amateur to Smart Card world. In this article, firstly I explain the concepts of the Smart Card and its industry and international specifications. Then the Smart Card system structures are illustrated in some details. Being referenced in designing simulated COS, PC/SC is very important, and the sections on IFD handler and SP are explained in more details.In the whole development of the system, the virtual Smart Card Reader driver and simulated COS are emphasized. After the setup of the simulated Smart Card system, CSP (Cryptographic Service Provider) is introduced to check the system running environment. Simultaneously, instructions for the RSA public key algorithm are referenced in the COS instruction illustration.Finally, I wish this kind of simulated Smart Card system can be used successfully in the development of different kinds of COS. Some Smart Card applications, such as software protection dongle, EMV bank card, and USB key, have different characteristics in COS system. Through the methods of the prototype development and system verification on simulated Smart Card system, the designing disfigurement and security weakness can be found early.
