With the widespread application of embedded technology, embedded real time operation system has found more and more applications in various defense systems as well as civilian equipment. Software design is playing an ever important role in various system developments and its performance has become one of the critical factors in implementing system performance.Taking XXX helicopter borne day and night observation and search system developed by Xi'an Institute of Applied Optics as experimental object, and taking the Vxworks real time operation system as the development environment, the paper focuses on the operation and control software design used in such system. In such electro-optical system, an operator gives command by operation and control unit via RS-422 serial communication link, and the subsystems work together to realize relevant system functions. Based on the features and function requirements of operation and control unit in the electro-optical system, a Vxworks based operation and control software is designed and implemented for airborne day and night observation system .The paper introduces the configuration concept and features of the embedded system and investigates real time operation system-Vxworks and its development environment - Tornado. The system composition and system function modules are briefly explained. Then software design is completed based on different function modules, the software design and implementation for each module are elaborated. Module division independency and information concealment are enhanced, real time performance and reliability of the software are improved in the software design process. During the software development process by structural design method, multi-application software technology is explored and implemented in system structure design based object oriented design principle. The application of such software technology provides technical support to modularization and system reconfiguration for the embedded electro-optical system, it will reduce development period and cost, improve product quality and reliability.
