Video Surveillance system is always a focus on the special-purpose network research which combined the embedded technologies and communication technologies. And it is widely used in traffic, electric power and civil aviation areas. As the information technologies in society continuously improve, the requirement for video surveillance systems improves, too. So the video systems for special-purpose network have widely market prospects and a good economy returns.Recently, the video surveillance system is developing quickly towards the goal of fast, wireless, real-time, and network depending on the improvement of the embedded technologies and wireless communication technologies. Advanced embedded processing technologies makes the video surveillance system's terminal has much stronger processing abilities and much lower costs. While the latest broad-band wireless communication technologies and network technologies make the real-time video transport possible according wireless networks. All these technologies make developing special-purpose wireless video surveillance systems economical and feasible. The video surveillance systems used these technology have the features such as: convenience, high-performance, low-cost, high adaptability, and can transport millions of video datum timely and expeditely. And that would do much favor in convenient resource sharing and efficient services supplying for administers and policy makers. This thesis works on the subject of developing large scale video surveillance system for forests. It gives out the feasible solutions for that system, and focus on the developing process of the terminal in the given solution. The thesis presents WiMAX networks to build large-scale forest monitoring system, and combines the embedded ARM technologies and WiMAX ASIC to develop the terminals fit for the system. We use the Samsung's S3C2410 as the CPU to develop the WiMAX terminal for this monitoring system, and has finished the development of the kernel processing system of the terminal, which was proved working steadily.
