With the growth of the Internet, the maturity of audio/video encoding and decoding technology and wide use of embedded system, networked multimedia system currently becomes a hot topic. This paper has proposed a new style of embedded network multimedia terminal based on DSP decoding and multiprocessor. It is multimedia oriented and provides functions such as media playback, media network-updating and local storage management.Chapter 1 introduces some related research and technologies. It briefly describes the mission and significance of the project.Chapter 2 first shows the software and hardware architectures of the terminal from a system perspective. It then analyzes the software structure and the relationship among all the modules.Chapter 3 first introduces multithreaded technology and its use in solving multiple concurrent tasks. It then describes using multithreading in Media Player (MP) process which is the main part of the system software, and analyzes the structure of MP process.Chapter 4 discusses the implementation of media playback, and the related technologies. It includes communication protocol between DSP and IDT processor, highlevel protocol of playback, MPEG4 and MP3 decoding, converting between AVI file and system file, data structure of data-stream and play control.Chapter 5 analyzes media network-updating based on TCP/IP protocol. It discusses the protocol between the file server and the terminal, and four types of media updating. It also analyzes the storage management interfaces and the media storage based on ext2 file system.Chapter 6 draws a conclusion of the whole dissertation and the prospect of future development.
