With the rapid development of wideband IP network and computer technology as well as video signal processing technology, network video system has created interest in science research and industry areas. Compared with conventional analog closed-circuit television system, network video system has several advantages. It is easy to arrange surveillance system as network and it has long distance coverage. Moreover, it has strong anti-noise ability, has good picture quality and is easy to query. It has been in fact the key technology of the third generation surveillance system because of these advantages.In this thesis, the solution of digital network surveillance system based on embedded system is presented. The embedded system to control video front-end, which includes A/D converting and digital video compressing devices, is used in the scheme. The network multimedia stream protocol is used to transmit data and the PC is used as the surveillance client. Technologies such as embedded software and hardware technology, video code and decode technology, stream media transmission technology, computer multimedia software technology have been used in the system.The overall description of video surveillance is presented the first chapter. And then, the scheme of design is described briefly. Chapter two to five cover the main technologies and their applications in the design.The design of embedded video server and video front-end are specified in the chapter two and three. They are integrated in a circuit board. In chapter four, stream media technologies, especially RTP/RTCP protocol and its application in the design are introduced. The programming of network video stream receiver using DirectShow technology is discussed in chapter five. This receiver is programmed as a filter, which is based on COM technology. Filter technology is a kind of object-oriented multi-media component presented by Microsoft. The design is explained in more details in chapter six.At the end of the thesis, the author's main contributions are concluded. The trend of digital video surveillance and the problems existing are also pointed.
