An Embedded MPEG4 Network Video Server Based On ARM920T And Linux

With the rapid development of the information technology and micro-electronics technology, today the application of network and multimedia can be seen everywhere. New embedded processors, network chips become more powerful, more sophisticated as while as media standards are developed quickly to meet the marketing, which extends the business of embedded system industry. Our goal in this paper is realizing real multimedia data compression and networking media communication in embedded system and developing a high performance, low cost, small-size (9cm × 5cm) and powerful embedded media server. The system we design and develop is based on ARM920T processor and Linux operating system. First we develop a module called embedded MPEG4 encoder, with the ARM processor AT91RM9200 and MPEG4 encoder IME6410. Then we port Linux to this platform, write driver for the IME6410 board, and optimize the software. Meanwhile a media streaming server is also exploited to support the transport of MPEG4 media. So the MPEG4 encoder and the media server are together, making up of the embedded MPEG4 media server. Besides, we extend this encoder with LCD and touch screen for future functional extendibility.In this paper, we first briefly introduce some basic information of embedded media server. Then an overview of our MPEG4 media server is described, with its principle, architecture and design philosophy. After that, we go deeply inside those three components of the MPEG4 encoder, including embedded arm-Linux host platform, IME6410 MPEG4 encoder and LCD & touch screen. Then, the design of media server is specified. At last, system test is presented.The system we build in this paper has very good extendibility, and can be used in a lot of situation. Thus it has great marketing potential.
