These years, the use of burst mode data transmission is increasing in digital-communication systems. These systems use point-to-point and point-to-multipoint connections over optical, wireless, and coaxial media. Designers worldwide are working on local-access approaches using time-division multiple-access (TDMA) technology. Examples include using passive optical networks (PONs) to realize fiber to the home, fiber to the curb. With the advent of the interactive services such as VOD (Video On Demand), the communication traffic from subscriber to central office are increasing significantly. And the broadband multimedia access technology that can afford voice, data, and video is one of today's hottest research-and-development areas. Of which, the passive optical network based on ATM (Asynchronous Transmission Mode) is one of the technologies that can supply the needed bandwidth. It combines the multi-services and multi-bit rate ability of ATM and the transparent transfer ability of PON, has higher technique dominance, and attracts many attentions. The APON system use the passive single-star or double-star architecture and the special point-to-multipoint multiple address protocol, the multiple branches (ONUs) share the capacity of one fiber and connect to one OLT to realize the sharing of the resources. The kernel of the APON is to transfer the ATM cells over PON. The network architecture of point-to-multipoint and the working mode of TDMA (Time Division Multiple Address) of APON make the upstream signal works in burst mode. Because the distances from different ONUs to OLT are different, the amplitudes and phases of the different signals will have significant difference when receiving the receive terminal. The burst mode optical transmitter and receiver module are used to transmit and receive the upstream burst-mode optical signal. To transmit and receive the signal successfully, both the receiving and the transmitting terminal need to use special technology. The burst mode optical transmitting and receiving technology is one of the key techniques used in APON system. However, up to now none of the signal generators can generate burst mode optical signal, so the research and test of the module are very inconvenient. So we setup a test system to generate burst mode optical signal, to simulate the feature of amplitude and phase disproportion of the burst mode signal, and at the same time it can change the relevant data when needed. The burst mode optical signal generators are used to simulate the upstream transmitting and receiving process, and detect the characteristics of the transmitter and receiver module. Only use this method, the indexes measured can satisfy the requirement of the real system. Because of the particularity of the burst mode optical signal, there are many differences between the continuous mode module and the burst mode module. On the basis of the technique scheme of the item-Researching of the Burst Mode Optical Receiver and Transmitter Module used in Broadband Access Network, this paper introduces the setup of the test system of the burst mode optical module for APON, offers the test indexes and method. There are 8 chapters in this paper. In chapter 1, the latest developments in the broadband access technology and APON system are described. The research aim, significance and the main research content of this paper are put forward. Chapter 2 analyzes the principle of the APON system and the key technologies used in it. Chapter 3 introduces technique characteristic of burst mode optical receiver and transmitter module in APON system, and proposes a method of designing 155Mb/s burst mode optical receiver and transmitter module. Chapter 4 discusses the function, principle, testing setup and method of the burst mode optical test system, and gives the main test index. Chapter 5 particularly introduces basic principle of the circuit of the burst mode signal generator used for the testing of the burst mode optical transmitter and receiver module. Chapter 6 and chapter 7 introduce the proce...
