With the development of the transportation, Intelligent Transportation system(ITS) is widely used in transportation management. What's more, License Plate Recognition(LPR) is the key technology of ITS. The image data collection and the License Plate Recognition algorithm are the tow parts of the LPR. There are some conditions such as the plate is clear or not, the weather is good or not, the characters of the plate's clearance, twist, absence or dirty, and so on, may increase the difficulty of the recognition. So, how to locate the plate quickly is the key point of the algorithm.The real time embedded system is designed which is including the collection, transportation and recognition of image on the application of license plate recognition. In the system, the TI's C6000 DSP and the Altera's FPGA are used.Some hardware and software works have been done in the system:(1) Hardware. Some chips in the system such as A/D, the power chips, FPGA, DSP, SDRAM, FLASH and so on are used in the system. The circuit and PCB of the system have been designed and debugged. The programs which are used to capture the images are run on the FPGA.(2) Software. The code which is used to configure SAA7113H is finished. And some code which is used as the drivers to configure FLASH and SDRAM is also finished.The capture system can make 25 fps digital video data output, and the FPGA can receive one frame of 720*572 image data. DSP works on the operation of the embedded system, including the system control and the algorithm of the LPR.Now the hardware system of the LPR system has been finished. And some work on the DSP's program is processing. The system can get image quickly, can recognition the statistic image, can communicate with PC through UART. With high speed, high stability, small size, and lower power requirment, this system provides one well platform for license plate recognition algorithms.
