With the rapid growth of the the 3th generation (3G) mobile communication network application, devices with great capacity and high performance are widely used in the network. At the same time, it becomes more important to improve the reliability and the maintainability of those devices. If service provided by carrier is disabled due to communication device's fault, the customers will suffer heavy economic loss, and the carrier will also be bankrupt in reputation. Therefore, it is necessary to detect and to repair the faults of communication devices at real time for the reliability of the whole system.Nowadays embedded technology is widely applied to 3G base station systems, and the basic unit of the communication system is single-board. This thesis chooses 3G base station transceiver as a practical supervised object, designs and implements an embedded diagnosis module. This module as one autonomous part provides two specific functions in 3GBSS network management software system:The first is single-board function test. This function's main aim is to detect all on-line test elements of certain board at one time, then to show all the results to users through Operation Maintenance Centre (OMC). Users can choose any single-board in the system if they want to know the working status. In this thesis, a good method to design test element space is also provided.The second is communication test. This function's main aim is to detect the communication status of links among the single-boards in the base station system. Users can choose any link object through OMC, then set the test parameters and start the test, at last obtain some performance objectives of the chosen link.Lastly, this thesis introduces a fault analysis test method based on FTA. This method is fault-oriented and applies a top-to-down diagnosis process, that is, looking on certain fault as a beginning point, then detecting the reason of the fault from top to down according to the FTA, at last find out the essential fault of the system. This method indicates the development direction for diagnosis mod Embedded diagnosis module and its software applications reside in the CPU boards of base station system, and it is connected to OMC through network. In this way, maintainer can detect the software and hardware faults in base station system at office. Any abnormal condition can be found out at real time and thus it assures the reliability of the system.
