Due to the fast development of communication technology in 21st century, the society has entered an information age. However, the digitized audio and video data have very large information, which making the storage and transmission difficult and has becoming the biggest barrier for people receiving or using them efficiently. Hence, researching and exploiting new and effective techniques of multimedia compression coding, namely storing and transferring these data in compressed mode, will be the best choice in future. The DSP-based video compression scheme is one of the popular ways to realize video compression and coding systems.In this thesis, an introduction to video compression principal, methods and central international video coding standards is done firstly. Then analyzing the core techniques of MPEG-4 and proposing a scheme of MPEG-4 SP encoder, the coding function is achieved in C successfully with test sequence; afterwards, studying the DCT/Quantation/Motion Estimation/Motion Compensation algorithm in detail. Accordingly, a scheme of a DSP-based video compression system is put forward, with the features of TI's TMS320C6711 DSP. At last, the transplant and optimization are considered on the basis of soft and hard environments, also the simulation process.In the end, the summarization about what has learned and arisen problems is given; meanwhile, the future research point and development about video coding is prospected.
