Experiment, as an interface between theoretical research and actual application, is vital in the engineering field. However, traditional hands-on labs which are restricted by certain issues such as cost, time, space, and so on, could hardly fulfill the requirement of researching and learning. In recent years, with the rapid development of computer and Internet technologies, it is becoming an inevitable trend to develop the virtual laboratory system in education field.A general method is presented in this paper for developing a web-based virtual laboratory, which is supported by Laboratory Special Investing& Constructing Fund. To implement this objective, the existing embedded platform is introduced in this system. Besides, several technologies are adopted, such as Virtual Instrument. At the beginning of this paper, researches and key technologies for implementing the virtual laboratory are introduced briefly. Subsequently, aiming at the objective of the paper and the actual situation of the existing resources, the characteristics of Client/Server and Browser/Server modes are analyzed and compared, and a web-based B/S structure is adopted for constructing the system. Besides, the functions and approaches for each part of the system are analyzed in the paper. In the procedure of process implementation, the paper introduced the main ideas and methods for developing the system in 3 steps: the communication between the virtual laboratory system and the embedded platform, the local access to the application server, and the remote access via Internet. Furthermore, detailed experiments are taken as examples in each step of the introductions to explicate the developing process in detail. Meanwhile, to secure communication and offer user-friendly interface, the user authentication mechanism and the user interface design are also researched in this paper.
