With the development of network technology, Internet has come to play an important role more and more in people's daily life and work. And IP packet-switch network is a representative of it. As the types and data traffic of services increase sharply, network should provide services with better capability and scalability. The applying mode of nowadays network is client/server-like. In such a mode, all services are provided by servers, and the resources of clients are ignored. It results in bad capability and scalability of services. P2P technology is brought forth to solve these problems.The most important character of P2P is that it cancels the client/server mode. Within a P2P network, a node is a client and a server at the same time. The service is provided by different nodes, not by one. This improves the use ratio of resources, bandwidth of network, etc. Nodes within this network can communicate with each other directly and share resources. Through adding an overlay upon the physical network, P2P network can work efficiently.There are a lot of P2P applications nowadays. And some of them are quite successful. The file sharing system is one of them. People can exchange files through a file sharing system. It improves the capability and scalability of services and works more efficiently in P2P mode than in C/S mode. File sharing is a basic application of P2P. We have finished designing the network structure and functions of a P2P file sharing system, and have realized the software with JAVA language. The software contains the main thoughts of P2P with only the basic functions. With adding other function models to it, other applications based on P2P can be built up.Some new applications with more traffic can make the server overloaded. VOD is such an example. QoS is very important to the VOD system. We have designed and built a VOD system based on P2P technology by ourselves. To learning the performance of the system, a simulation platform has been built.
