This dissertation analyzes the general development trend of the Automated Test System and Virtual Instruments, and gives a brief conception of Instrument Driver. The rapid adoption of the virtual instrumentation technology in the last 20 years catalyzed a revolution in instrumentation for test, measurement, and automation. Virtual instrumentation technology increases the productivity and lowers test system development costs. Instrument drivers are an important component in modern automated test systems. They perform the communication and control of the instrument hardware in the system, as well as providing a high-level and easy-to-use programming model that turns complex instrument measurement capabilities into simple software function calls.The IVI-COM design and realization of signal generator is the main task of this dissertation. Interchangeable Virtual Instruments, or IVI, is a revolutionary standard for instrument driver software technology. IVI can provide you with many benefits, such as: high performance, instrument simulation, instrument interchangeability, development flexibility. There are two very different models for interfacing with an IVI driver: IVI-COM and IVI-C. The dissertation provides the basic development process of an IVI-COM driver, including design, implementation and so on. Agilent Driver Kit and Microsoft Visual C++ are chosen as the design and programming tools, which hide the details of COM and give the designed IVI-COM driver much more flexibility.The dissertation also provides information and a detailed background of the SCPI syntax automation test. Some examples for testing the SCPI parser of the signal generator are given. After that, there is a Level Test for the functions of IVI-COM driver. In addition, the dissertation discusses the basic design ideas of the automated test system based on IVI-COM driver for the firmware of the signal generator, including the design of the software structure, the design of the user interface and the program flow charts.The IVI-COM driver discussed in the dissertation has already completed.
