With the development of network technology, the Internet has become a very important part of peoples'life. Streaming media technology is invented to help us to watch live media. This technology mainly contains three content: 1)Media encode/decode standards, such as MPEG serials, H.26xserias etc. 2)Media transport protocols, such as RTSP, MMS etc. 3)Content delivery methods, such as C/S model, the high cost CDN model, IP multicast etc. But, the traditional C/S model usually confines the amount of users due to the limited bandwidth resource. The IP multicast technology is also hardly to be deployed because of some technique problem. To solve those problems, the application layer multicast(ALM) technology has been proposed. This technology which adopts the method of data sharing among peers in P2P network, constructs a application layer network and makes use of data transferring between nodes to implement the multicast function. This technology is also a low cost content delivery method. Currently, the ALM protocols mainly contain two types: 1) Tree-based protocol and extensions, such as NICE,ZIGZAG etc.; 2) gossip-based protocol, such as DONet.Valepp, A streaming media multicast system based on a gossip overlay network is proposed in this dissertation. This system maintains the ALM network by gossip protocol. The nodes fetch data through certain scheduling method. In this system, the more users participate, the better media playing quality are achieved. The system architecture, ALM group management, media buffer and data scheduler modules will be explicitly presented in this paper. Then the simulation result based on NS2 will be given and discussed to prove the feasibility of this system. Finally, the current implement of Valepp will be given, which can fetch live media data from common media server. The users can join the ALM and share data with their partners. The amount of the users can breakthrough the limit of the media server.
