This thesis is based on the National High Technology Research and Development Programof China (863 project)—Research on key technologies in Mobile Ad hoc Networks based on 3G technology, focusing on QoS routing in MANETs.Based on the analysis of the factors which affect the routing protocol design, the key technique issues of ad hoc routing protocols are summarized, including route loop-freedom, adaptation to dynamic topology, control overhead, energy efficiency, combination with orientation technique etc.The routing protocol Q_AODV is designed and implemented. Q_AODV exists as an application program in the system, using 'socket', which provided by the operation system, for message exchange between nodes. The routing protocol module has interfaces with APP and MHC, requiring communicating with MAC as well. The debugging of QAODV and the interface testing between the layers has already been completed. The system testing among the APP, the routing protocol and the MHC has been accomplished, with real-time traffic, video frequency and compact message communicating well.An improved energy efficient CEDAR protocol has been presented based on CEDAR. Simulation results show that the improved CEDAR is more efficient in terms of packet delivery ratio, average end-to-end delay and mean-square error of energy compared with CEDAR.A new routing protocol based on DSDV is designed to provide QoS support in MANETs with unidirectional links. Both the bandwidth and the hop distance of the path are considered in QUR to improve the performance of MANETs, and bandwidth resource is reserved along the path for real-time traffic. Simulation results show that the QoS of real-time traffic is guaranteed in QUR, and QUR achieves better performance in terms of throughput and control overhead compared with DSDV.Innovation points:1. An energy efficient CEDAR protocol is proposed.2. A new bandwidth calculation algorithm is proposed. When the available bandwidth of the link is scarce, the bandwidth calculation algorithm can suggest that new connection requests should be rejected to avoid performance degradation of the ongoing connections. At the same time, this algorithm can enlarge the throughput of the network by making full use of the available bandwidth.3. A QoS routing protocol in MANETs with unidirectional links is designed.4. A new method of detecting unidirectional links is presented. It can detect unidirectionallinks to avoid route errors.
