Along with the severity of software crisis, more and more software corporations and research institutions are exploring effective software quality management methods. Standards like CMM model, ISO9000, describe the principles and practice underlying software process maturity from a high corporation level, but are unsuitable for projects to complish timely work inspection and quality improvement. In contrast, the analysis to defects found in testing is a direct way to collect product quality information.As the topic of this paper, ODC (Orthogonal Defect Classification) is a defect analysis method, which integrates the strongpoints of root analysis method and statistical model. Using product defects as analysis data, it summarizes universal, standardized templates for defect classification, and based on software science and practice, deeply digs valuable information from different aspects of defects which provide quantitative evidence for quality measurement. How to get flexible exit criteria for different testing phases? How to judge product to be stable and the testing work to be effective and complete? From which aspects to improve project development and testing work? How to measure the users' satisfaction to the product? And how to work on the statistics and analysis of omitted defects from testing? Above identified questions will be answered in this paper, with practical project samples for details.After the introduction to ODC concept, effectiveness, execution roles and implementary steps, details on assessment work are described completely and systematically at testing checkpoints identified to be suitable for ODC assessment, and several key points and tips that should be focused in the course are shared, which help the success of ODC implementation. Besides, summary to the experiential learning from ODC implementation in sample projects of different development models (waterfall and iterative model) is recorded, including traits and focus points.Besides, in maintenance phase, in order to make a maximum use of users' feedback to improve product quality and project management, OPC method, which is similar to ODC method, is introduced so as to help the analysis of users' problem records, feedback after product release. In addition to help ongoing product maintenance work, it does inspection to accomplished development and testing work, and instructions on the adjustment to project plan relevant to project development, testing and ODC quality management. What's more, how to analyze omitted defects in maintenance phase is valuable in this paper. Combination of ODC and OPC will accomplish the whole process of project quality management.
