With the rapid expansion of Internet and Intranet, some kinds of software systems have been greatly evolved, especially the Workflow Management System, WfMS. The main intension of WfMS is the automation of procedures where documents, information or tasks are passed between participants according to a predefined set of rules to achieve an overall business goal.Distribution, autonomy and heterogeneity of modem enterprise's information become more and more remarkable with the fast development of IT technology and enterprise's globalization. Under such environment, the traditional WfMS can's meet such requirements for it's limitation.Web Services is a new type SOA(Service Oriented Architecture),whose main merits are in the person of platform-independency and language-independency. Message passing is a simple mechanism that can realize the interoperation between computers. Then they provide a communication infrastructure and basic mechanism for realizing distributed WfMS.Firstly, this paper analysis the deficiency of the traditional WfMS, then research on some relevant aspects of building distributed WfMS based on Web Services and message mechanism. The main content is as follows:1. The process meta-model and total architecture of distributed WfMS based on Web Services and message mechanism are illustrated.2. Follow WFMC-TC-1012 and WFMC-TC00-1003 norms, propose the solutions for distributed process definition and distributed running of process instance based on Web Services and message mechanism.3. Some relevant aspects' resolutions such as process monitor, management, simple exception handling and application invocation are illustrated. On the basis of the above research, developed a Distributed Workflow Management System(DWfMS) based on Xin'pai-driven workflow Model. In this paper, the analysis and design of it's some relevant parts are illustrated, in the same time, some key relevant technologies are analysised.
