Aiming at some drawbacks in traditional workflow modeling methods, for example, workflow modeling based on ECA rules is not easy to implement the visualization of graphics and support complicated tasks. Moreover, workflow modeling based on Petri network and its transmutation enable the model to be extremely complex and incomprehensive when describing the complex process of the task. Additionally, workflow modeling based on active networks is short of the flexibility. In this paper, we propose a novel workflow modeling method based on extending ECA rules in order to improve these drawbacks. In our method, we not only make use of dynamic intercommunications of ECA rules to describe the model, but also extend the ECA rules in its structure and principal parts in such a way that it solves the weakness of semantics of ECA rules as describing the complicated process and improves the usability of ECA rules. Plus, we make advantage of active graphics to define the process and add some modeling elements which includes logic symbols of workflow and ECA rules. By this improvement, we make it more preferable to model workflow process, expand the description abilities of workflow modeling, and strengthen its visualization and flexibility.According to this modeling method, we design and implement workflow engine based on the extension of ECA rules. Furthermore, we apply the extended ECA rules to workflow engine to carry out the logic control of engine. Meanwhile, we establish the environment of modeling and also provide the relevant modeling example, the modeling circumstance is also designed to support the generation of XPDL-based workflow model.According to the methods and theories researched above, we exploit a light-weight workflow management system based on extended ECA rules and discuss the realized technologies in detail. Through the practical application in the management of the human resource, it is verified to decrease the period of exploitations and still runs stably.
