Due to the disturbance resulted from constant underground mining activities, the extraction opening more often than not loses its stability. To ensure the routine work and the safety of the miners, some supporting type must be adopted to stabilize the extraction opening.The choice of the supporting type for the extraction opening and the parameters concerned are affected by many factors such as geology, engineering, and production technology. Moreover, for the time being we haven't fully recognized the emergence law of the surrounding rock pressure and the interaction between the supporting and the rocks. Therefore, the choice of a correct supporting type is the result of synthesis of methods. Designers are usually empirical in their design of the traditional tunnel supporting, which lacks macro, comprehensive, and scientific bases. The unreasonable choice of the supporting type and the parameters makes it difficult to protect the tunnel, hinders the underground transportation and ventilation, and causes a waste of human power and material resources. With the development of network techniques and artificial intelligence as well as their penetration into the mining industry, to design an expert system of the mining extraction working face and tunnel supporting with the help of computer and through expert system techniques will definitely alter the designing method of traditional supporting, and will be conducive to propel the info-construction of the mining industry.This dissertation aims to draw the rules of the tunnel supporting in a working face by means of the expert system techniques, and by extension, to reason in accordance with these rules in order to come out with the supporting type, which meets the needs of production. The system, which consists of a large number of theoretical and practical achievements, constructs a knowledge base according to the rules thus drawn, and carries out an evaluation on the supporting type generated thereby both technically and economically. Engineering technicians can obtain a fairly good supporting type through the friendly human-computer interface. What they need to do is merely do some basic experiments, measure, and input the data into the computer.The expert system is most likely to utilize the existing knowledge, experience, and lessons in designing a supporting type, takes into full consideration various factors, providing a reliable basis for the supporting design with the help of the expert system rather than the experts. What's more, the expert system has been proved efficient through the practical usage. So, the expert system is of theoretical and practical value in designing the supporting type in a working face.
