Gear drive is the most familiar kind of mechanical drive in latter-day machines, and also an important mode that transfers the impetus that makes the machine move and work. The gear is the import and basic part of machines, so, how to design and manufacture a gear may be a very important problem because its performance can directly affects the performance and quality of machines.Because it is the very complicated work to design the gear, now designing the gear demands a great deal of manpower and takes a great deal of time. Design efficiency and design quality are not very good.On the bases of analysis and researching means of gear design and some design software, the framework of GCAD(Gear CAD) system based on Artificial Intelligence was build. The characteristic of GCAD system was using of artificial neural network technique, expert system technique, object oriented technique, etc.The paper uses Visual C++ 6.0 of Microsoft company and Object ARX 2000 of AutoDesk company as IDE(Integrated Develop Environment). The GCAD system runs on the AutoCAD 2000. and fits for Windows98/NT/2000 operating systems. The GCAD system consists of five parts, such as parameter calculation, parametric drawing, expert system, aid functions and help system. The performance of GCAD system is well improved by making use of advantage of MATLAB and AutoCAD by MATLAB Engine. The GCAD system utilizes Artificial Neural Network to mapping coefficients of the gear, establish the foundation for optimization design of the gear. By parametric design, the system realizes drawing and solid modeling. By using expert system, the GCAD system can aided designer to make some scheme decision, as well as some important designing, calculating, checking, analysis and drawing, so, can improve the design quality, as wellas work efficiency of the designer.Some important meaning was presented by GCAD system and may be valuable to research and develop new CAD systems.
