Free-space laser communications is developing rapidly these days. It is widely used in satellite communication and ground communication that needs quick building, and has shown a large potential market and a bright future. In this paper, the software and hardware designs of video collection used in free-space laser communications are studied. First of all, hardware establishment and the basic theory of free-space laser communications alredy in existence are introduced, and the different methods of video collection are compared. An integrated system based on the structure composed of DSP, CPLD and two of SRAM is designed. Real-time image processing and more data capacity are achieved. The high-speed board design of video collection is finished and some problems such as integrity of signal, power distribution, electromagnetism disturbance etc. are solved. The programmes of IIC simulated by Microcontroller, "ping pang" collection and Enhanced Parallel Port of computer simulated by Complex Programmable Logic Device are finished. At last, the system is debugged and analyzed in details. Results of the experiment show that the "pingpang" video collection is effective and the video collection and coding may run at the same time.
