The optical fiber cladding serves as an important part of the fiber connector, an optical passive component of the greatest demand in optical communications field. In manufacturing, the real time inspection for the inner hole of the optical fiber cladding is needed for ensuring high connection precision. Therefore it is necessary to develop a specialized equipment to inspect the parameters of the optical fiber cladding inner hole. After nearly one year's effort and cooperation between Shanghai Electric Cable Research Institute and us, we successfully developed China's first testing instrument, which provides the local manufacturers with a high-speed, fully-automatic, high-quality testing system for optical fiber inner hole. The research work in this dissertation is the assignment of us in developing this new kind of testing instrument, including designing the CCD imaging system, image caperturing and calculating software.The end face of the fiber cladding is imaged by a microscope and the image received by a CCD camera is transferred to a image grabber plugged in a microcomputer for further analysis. Several digital image processing methods, such as the image segmentation and edge detection techniques are used to extract feature datapoints. The data is analyzed using different algorithms to give the geometry parameters of the fiber inner hole. Sophisticated software is programmed. An instrument with high accuracy and high noise-resistant ability which can be operated conveniently is developed based on the hardware and software described above.
