The Internet has quickly evolved into a very critical communications infrastructure. Rapid growth and increasing requirements for service quality, reliability, and efficiency have made traffic engineering an essential consideration in the design and operation of large public Internet backbone networks. Internet traffic engineering addresses the issue of performance optimization of operational networks. This paper presented an overview of some of the basic issues surrounding traffic engineering over MPLS in IP networks, including the basic concepts, the performance object of MPLS –TE, the historical review of the technologies of traffic engineering, the measurement method of traffic matrix and network resource, the constraint-based routing framework, how to establish and maintain the TE Tunnel by RSVP –TE signaling protocol, how to modify SPF algorithm to calculate IP routes to forward traffic over tunnels that are set up by Traffic Engineering, Tactical traffic engineering and Strategic traffic engineering, load balancing on parallel TE Tunnels, to achieve fine-grained optimization of transmission resources by Diff -Serv aware TE, and to enhance the network survivability by fast reroute mechanism. Especially, the paper discussed the principle and mechanism of RSVP –TE signaling protocol in detail. The author took part in the MPLS –TE project of Core Router in a communicate company. Based on these work, the paper analyzed the method to design and implement the MPLS –TE system. Especially, this paper detailed discussed how to design and implement the RSVP –TE signaling protocol.
