Today, the incessant growth of the network scale and traffic, as a result of rapid evolution of the Internet, has made the problem of network resource lack and network congestion more and more serious. Furthermore, new multimedia applications require the network to provide quality of service (QoS) guarantees. So, traffic engineering (TE) is proposed for that. Its purposes are to minimize the congestion and improve the network performance through optimizing resource utilization of the existing networks. However, the current technology of TE is limited by its inherent expansibility and administration complexity and can not adapt well to the growth of network. It is urgent to seek a kind of new technology to apply to TE. MPLS has been regarded as the most promising technology for TE. In this paper, we study much on MPLS-based traffic engineering (MPLS-TE) and emphasize on constraint-based routing (CBR) algorithm, and system implementation for MPLS-TE.First, the principle of MPLS, the conception and mathematic definition of TE are introduced. In this foundation, we analyse how to apply MPLS to TE and the advantage of MPLS-TE is concluded.Then, the existing CBR algorithms are classified and analysed. A new dynamic CBR algorithm-TERA is proposed based on current primary dynamic algorithms. The simulation results show that TERA not only achieves high throughput but also balances traffic load with bandwidth guarantee.The method of system implementation for MPLS-TE is also summed up, and a centralized implementation frame of MPLS-based DiffServ-aware traffic engineering-DMTE is gived to centralized server way, which can guarantee QoS and improve network utilization using different routing algorithm and admission control according to speciality of different services.Finally, the implementation technology of MPLS-TE based on router is studied. Two implemented modules, which are CR-LDP and TEMIB, are mainly described.
