Embedded Linux Applications

Through many years sequence development, Linux become a functional operation system. To the traditional operation system it has become a powerful opponent. Today in the field of the embedded system, embedded Linux has made a great progress and developed a large market. Nowadays, more and more embedded products use Linux as their operation system. Many companies think that Linux will have a good prospect in the embedded system field, and they have joined into this field, become a member of the teams that aim to study and develop the Linux. The companies include many international famous companies, such as IBM, SGI, Intel etc, in the domestic companies such as ZTE, Huawei have joined into the developing group also. So many companies come into the field that have promoted the market and enlarged the space of embedded system development. AT the same time more and more programmers transfer from traditional embedded operation system to embedded Linux. Our team and Sichuan Jiuzhou Electric Group Co.Ltd develop an embedded product named "portable electric reader book". In the first version of the product we considered the price fact, and the period of the design and development as first, and so the functions of this product is relative simple, in which we used an program with infinite circulated and an interrupt to control the system. In the following version of the product we plan to add many new functions and consider the facilities to maintaining the system, it is necessary to use an operation system in our system. My major work is to study the second version of the product beforehand, so we task is how to construct an embedded Linux system on the target board. This paper describes the basic conception and history of development of the embedded Linux system. We have introduced how to construct an embedded Linux system in details, and analyzed the main components in the embedded Linux system. We mainly analyzed the using and disposal of the NOR and NAND memory device, about the using of the file system, the programming of the Ramdisk driver, and the programming the bootload of the system.
