The aim of this project is to design and develop a general virtual testing instrument to improve the current experimental environment of electrical and electronic majors in universities, and to establish a modern experimental environment. Combined with the technology of virtual instrument and USB, the module of high-speed data acquisition and signal generator is designed to compose a general testing instrument in which the virtual oscilloscope and virtual signal source are included. As long as we update the application program, a variety of experiments can be carried out on this virtual testing instrument, such as filter characteristics of amplitude and frequency, operational amplifier circuits, RLC testing, etc. In this paper, general construction and working principle of this virtual testing instrument are firstly discussed. Then, the following chapters respectively introduce the theory and design scheme of each software and hardware module which constitutes the whole virtual testing instrument. The hardware is composed of three parts: high-speed data acquisition, signal generator and USB communication. Also, the software is made of three parts: microcontroller firmware, USB device driver and top-layer application.
