The Next Generation Internet based on IPv6 has been rising rapidly, and IPv6 network will supply a kind of brand-new and infinite space for the whole IT world. So, the appearance of IPv6 gives our Chinese IT industry an extremely wonderful opportunity to grasp advanced technologies. And IPv6 router certainly becomes the most significant research title. In order to help more people understand and utilize IPv6 routers, it will be very valuable to study how to decrease the cost of IPv6 routers and how to use them conveniently. Therefore, we utilized the excellent network module of Linux which supported IPv6 very well to study the IPv6 based Visual Router Model, and we also developed a prototype system named VRS6.This dissertation mainly introduces the key technology and innovative research of VRS6, which mainly consists of system architecture, routing configuration language and implementation of routing protocols.In the chapter 1, we briefly summarize the lack of IPv4, the generation background and application connotation of IPv6, the technologies of supporting to IPv6 of Linux network module. By analyzing the shortcomings of current IPv6 devices and routing softwares, we present an IPv6 based visual router software model.In the chapter 2, we present the hierarchy model, logical model and architecture of VRS6. With these models, we clearly and wholly discussed the components, functions and implementation technologies of the system.In the chapter 3, we define a kind of routing configuration language that briefly describes the process of routing configuration. It is the textual base of visualization and the medium of connection between configuration tools and routers. Besides, we concretely indicate the grammar of the language and its compile.In the chapter 4, we discuss the routing program, which is the core of the whole system. From bottom level to top level, we introduce the interface encapsulation of operating system, common data structure of the system and the implementation mechanism of sub-processes of every routing protocol.In the chapter 5, we briefly introduce the platform, tools, devices, running environments, running interfaces and some kernel codes of the VRS6 prototype system, which helps to understand the way of routing configuration.In the end, all of the works in this dissertation are summed up, and their futures are prospected.
