With the rapid development of information technology, the increasing demand of customers, and the intensifying competition, telecommunication network is undergoing profound changes and calls for the next generation network in face of new opportunities and challenges. Accordingly, each major telecommunication operator is trying to establish an IP network, which can cover China with its advanced technology, flexibility of operation and management, safety and reliability features, and powerful ability of transmission and services, so as to provide high speed broadband accessibility.Henan Province is one of the most populated provinces in China, and Kaifeng is one of the major cities of the province. The construction of metropolitan area network (MAN) will certainly promote the local economy and the economic performance of telecommunication operators. This paper is focused on the selection of MAN access technology and the establishment of the supporting system. This paper comprises four parts. The first part analyzes the status quo of the broadband network of Henan Communication Corporation, namely, the structure of the broadband IP network of Henan Communication Corporation at the kernel layer and the network structure of the broadband IP network of Kaifeng Communication Corporation at the kernel / edge layers. The concept of broadband MAN is also introduced in this part. The second part mainly studies the broadband access technologies of MAN, including ADSL, LMDS, Ethernet, ATM-PON, HomePNA, Cable Modem. Through the analysis of the introduction of the above technologies, technological principles, technological characteristics, and the applicable environments, a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of these technologies is made. Based on the comparison and analysis of the guiding principles of broadband MAN construction of major operators, namely, China Telecom, China Unicom, China Netcom, China Cable and Communications Inc., Jitong Network Communications Company Limited, China Mobile, China Railcom, China Satcom, the guiding principles of the broadband MAN construction and the selection of access technology for Kaifeng Communication Corporation are determined. The third part explicates the needs, principles and contents of the Kaifeng Communication broadband MAN.The fourth part makes an analysis of the running mode after the construction of the broadband MAN, the distributed technology proposal for the combination of DHCP+ and Radius, the configuration of the data on access layer and pool layer, the charging authentication technology solution for student users on campus, and the realization of VPN at ADSL access layer. In light of the reality of Kaifeng Communication broadband MAN construction, this paper, through comparison, makes an analysis of the broadband access technologies and the problems concerning the operation of Kaifeng Communication network. It reaches the conclusion that the application of optical fiber is the future orientation for broadband access. However, regarding operators like Kaifeng Communication, the selection of appropriate access technologies so as to fully utilize the current infrastructure resources is the optimum policy in face of fierce competition.During the work on this paper for the past months, it is keenly felt that the biggest difficulty is the lack of the experimental environment for the study of operation. Since the author is solely engaged in multimedia services marketing management, and the existing networks and facilities are currently in operation, it is greatly limited in both research time and experimental conditions, accordingly the paper is more focus on the selection of engineering construction technologies and the analysis of realistic operational technologies.
