The basic organic light-emitting device (OLED) consists of a number of ultra-thin organic layers between two electrodes. Under low applied voltage, the recombination of carriers coming from cathode and anode can produce intense light output. Since 1987, OLED has received much attention and now are beginning to enter the display markets where they may eventually be the dominant flat panel display devices.A good driving method is very important for OLED displays.Active-matrix and passive-matrix driving methods have been uti1ized now. In this paper, these two methods are reviewed.In particular. It is also emphasised that the present trend is in favour of digital addressing.This thesis mainly discusses the driving chip and driver for the OLED. First of all, it takes a review of the concepts and theories describing the mechanisms of organic electro-luminescence , and introduces some interior research about the driving circuit for the passive matrix OLED. We have analyzed the working process of the OLED driving chip. Analysed the mechanism of realizing gray-scale on OLED panel based on OLED panel luminescence characteristic. after comparing the methods in analog driver and digital driver to realize gray-scale of OLED ,and explain the difficulties of realizing gray-scale on OLED panel using voltage model were introduced.Compared and analysed in detailed of the method of Area gray and Time gray of PWM and sub-frame of digital driver method. It is also emphasised that the present trend is in favour of digital addressing.We put forward a method based on sub frame technique. In this way a new control circuit to realize gray-scale by sub-frame technique has been designed ,which is achieved by FPGA device . The emulation on result of 16 grade of gray scale are analyzed in the paper. The emulational result indicated that the realization of the gray-scale with 16-grade gray-scale on OLED panel can be obtained by FPGA device. The sub-frame technique is suitable for AM OLED matrix display.At last this thesis gives some advices about the design of the OLED's driver IC.
