After the entry of WTO, a large number of foreign capitals have flown into China. As a result, the socialistic market economy is being perfected and our national politics, economy and culture have entered into a fast-developing phase. Standing firmly in a fierce competition in the newspaper business, the city newspapers have entered into the transitional period. In this thesis, the author focuses on the developing trend of the city newspapers during this period in our country.Firstly, on the retrospection of the developing process of the city newspapers, the author of the thesis analyzes the deep-seated reasons of the emergence of the city newspapers from various respects such as politics, economy, the demand of the readers and the development of the urbanization, and so on. Next, the author reveals the present competitions, namely, the homogeneity and scale competition among the city newspapers on the basis of analysis of the real situation.Consequently, it arouses the price war and some other side effects. Thus the author put forward her own suggestions for these conflicts: "difference competition", "cooperation competition" and "the brand competition".The last part is the key part of this thesis. City newspapers have entered a comparatively smooth developing period after all these years. At this crucial turning point, what would be the developing trend of citynewspapers? On the basis of the analysis of some of the western popular newspapers, especially "One Penny Only" newspaper in U.S., the author of the thesis makes two predictions on the developing trend and competitive situation of the city newspapers, that is, some of the city newspapers which have a promising developing potential will become the main stream of the newspapers business. As for the rest, they will probably seek for their own developing space according to the demand of the market, either remaining its taste with the popular trend, or transforming to a specific field.
