With the fast extending of network scale, increasing of network complexity and multiplying of network applications, the demand for better complex and heterogeneous network management is rising, A good network management system(NMS)should help networks fully exert their functions. At present, most of the NMS are based on SNMP. Although easily implemented, this kind of systems lacks sufficient flexibility and intelligence in management, therefore devoid of the ability of managing complex and heterogeneous networks. Mobile agent technology provides a new way to manage networks. Since its mobility and intelligence can greatly improve the flexibility and intelligence of the NMS, and its platform independence can easily realize multi-platform network management. It is considered to be a good scheme to combine Mobile agent with SNMP-based management technology.This dissertation firstly expound current network management system in common use , and expatiate the domestic and international research work at present condition about Mobile agent-based network management system, also Analysis the advantage of Agent-based network management system. Chapter 2 briefly introduces the functional model and system architecture of a NMS and its related technology echniques. Chapter 3 makes a detailed discussion on Mobile agent and investgates Mobile agent technology and its platform. Chapter 4 to Chapter 5 provides a Mobile agent-based NMS framework, discussed fault management and performance management based on Mobile agent system, describes the fundamental implementation of the system. Finally, the dissertation concludes with the expectation of further research and the outlook of the research work.
