The Passive Optical Network based on Asynchronous Transfer Mode has the combination of two merits. One is ability of ATM's supporting multi-services and multi-bitrates, the other is ability of PON's transferring transparent bandwith. APON is one of the ideal broadband access solutions and holds the wide application prospect in the future. This dissertation is focused on the research of the overall design of Transfer Convergence (TC) layer, design of upstream access function in TC layer, critical techniques of upstream access and design of optimization method. Based on the design of TC layer, the idea of design of upstream access function is emphatically brought forward. The overall design of upstream access and the layered design of its modules are independently accomplished and the design is represented by VHDL language and schematics. The function of upstream access is successfully implemented by FPGA and also works well in TC layer. The results of simulation demonstrate the success of the design. Moreover, the optimization design is firstly considered and its superiority is also preliminarily discussed. This dissertation is sponsored by Jiangsu Hi-Tech Project. The project name is Research and Development of Optical Network Terminals in Passive Optical Network System Based On Asynchronous Transfer Mode. The. project code is BG2001046.
