Digital HDTV (Digital High Definition Television) technology integrates the most advanced image compressed encoding technology and the digital transmission technology. It has become one of the focuses in the high-tech competitions. DVB is the digital HDTV standard that developed by more than 170 organizations in Europe. It mainly comprises satellite (DVB-S), terrestrial (DVB-T) and cable (DVB-C) digital television systems.This paper is about algorithms of carrier recovery used in DVB-C channel receiver system and its implementation in ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit).The first chapter gives an overview of digital HDTV and its development, then focus on the DVB-C system, finally talks about the technology involved in ASIC.The second chapter makes an introduction of the fundamental theory of QAM modulation & demodulation, also briefly describes the basic principle of PLL.The third chapter discusses all kinds of algorithms of carrier recovery. After analyzing their characteristics and differences, it brings forward the algorithm & structure applicable for DVB-C system, followed by performance curve.The fourth chapter is the implementation part of carrier recovery in ASIC, including structure division, hardware design logic synthesis and verification. The ASIC design skills oriented to synthesis and DFT (Design for Test) are discussed in the end.The main contributions of this paper are proposing the algorithm and ASIC implementation scheme of carrier recovery applicable for DVB-C system. It also discusses the ASIC design skills for synthesis and DFT according to practical experiences.
