With the fast development of telecom and internet techniques, it is clear that telephone network and packet data communication network will converge into NGN(Next Generation Network) in the near future. IAD(Integrated Access Device) which can provide integrated access services of vioce,data and video will replace all kinds of access device nowaday. It will bring users the reliable and low-cost VoIP,VOD and other data services.As a client telecom device, IAD must have the characteristic reliablity as well as easiness to be customized according to user's requirements. Embedded operating system is the basis of software system in IAD. Its realtime efficiency and portable peculiarity make developing of IAD with lower cost in a shorter period as possible. So it is of high importance to research on how to design and implement LAD based on embedded operating system.This thesis presents the author's work of research and practices during his studying for master degree. It is mainly organized around designing and developing of IAD based on embedded realtime OS named RTEMS. Firstly, it describes in general the integrated access device and NGN; then it presents in detail the embedded operating system and embedded system developing technology. Next, We present the idea of software and hardware architechtecture of IAD system. Much attention is paid to important issues in implementing system layer and network protocol stack of software architecture. In the last part of this thesis, the author presents some sugguestions on future research works of this area and summarizes this thesis through a case study.
