Abstract/Summary:
With the rapid development of Information Highway, the Internet based applications have transferred from single services to integrated services, which provide the data, voice, and video services to the consumers. Nowadays, the wide application of optical fibers in backbone networks have made a great breakthrough in the throughput of the trunk networks, and comparatively, the traditional analogous and narrow band access networks have become the bottleneck for the development of the communication networks.Owing to its fast development and innate broadband nature, digital TV systems, especially HFC/CATV networks, are competitive candidates for broadband access networks, which meet the bandwidth requirements of convergence of video, voice and Internet data services.Two of the key technologies for broadband data service on CATV network are Data Broadcasting and Cable Modem Technology. Data broadcasting system is a key component of Digital Television System, and the popular specifications for it are DVB/DAVIC in Europe and ATSC in America. The Cable Television Laboratories drafted out the DOCSIS standard for Cable Modem System, and is widely used in the production of industry. This thesis gives them a brief introduction and comparison first and then presents a solution for data broadcasting technology. Lastly, we introduce the implementation of IP-CATV and CATV-IP gateway, which are key part of data broadcasting system, using the state-of-the-art technology-embedded FPGA. The paper is organized as follow:Chapter 1 gives a brief survey on broadband access techniques, HFC/CATV network, protocols and standards for data transmission technology over HFC network and overview of embedded technologies we used.Chapter 2 offers a brief description of DVB/DAVIC standards, including the format of MPEG-2 Transmission Stream, package method of DVB, and the components of DVB Data Broadcasting System.Chapter 3 presents our solution for data broadcasting and our implementation method of IP-CATV/CATV-IP gateway, including system architecture, software and hardware implementation, and SOPC technology based on Nios soft CPU core. The two features of this embedded FPGA technology and the methods using to improve system performance are also discussed in detail. Finally, the analysis of system performance is made.
