In the field of digital image processing, image compression coding is always a hot and important topic. With the development of multimedia application, the requirement of compression is beyond the technology provided by JPEG standard. To meet the needs in multimedia applications, a new wavelet-based image compression standard- JPEG2000 was developed in 2000.At the other hand, human eyes are the receptor of the image, so it is very important to study the characteristics of human vision system when we try to design a new coding algorithm. JPEG2000 is based on wavelet transform which provides multi-resolution analyses similar to the multi-channel decomposition of human vision. In this paper, we firstly summarize the basic principles and some popular methods of digital image compression. Then we discuss all kinds of visual optimization tools which are compatible with the frame of JPEG2000. In this paper, we design a new coding algorithm which is based on the frame of JPEG2000 and combines the masking feature of human vision system and the three component model of nature image. Experimental results show that, compared to the JPEG 2000, our method have significant improvement in the visual quality under the same compression ratio.
