With the development of the multimedia technology and Internet technology, the digital image data has been widely used in the domain of digital camera, digital image database, the Internet and so on. JPEG2000 is the latest generation of static image coding algorithm. JPEG 2000 is based on the discrete wavelet transform instead of traditional discrete cosine transform and takes the algorithm of the Embedded Block Coding with Optimized Truncation as the core of entropy coding algorithm. With much excellent performance such as high compression ratio, progressive transmission and error recovery, JPEG2000 can satisfy the increasing demand of image.At the same time, the rapid development of electronic technology especially the integrated circuit technology solves the problem that JPEG2000 is difficult to be applied in real-time compression occasions because of its complex algorithm. Various special image compression and video processing chip emerges as required and becomes the hot research at home and abroad.This thesis is focused on the research and design of the EBCOT algorithm in JPEG2000. The main researches are as follows:1 The thesis focuses on the research of the JPEG2000 standard and introduces the compression process, streaming organization and file format briefly.2 Doing deep research and analysis on the bit plane algorithm in EBCOT algorithm. According to the characteristic of the bit plane algorithm, this thesis adopts the system architecture based on the row processing in the bit plane encoder and makes researches on the algorithm, design and simulation of each module.3 Doing the study on the MQ arithmetic coding in JPEG2000. According to its characteristic, the thesis makes a design of architecture in four pipelines, designs and optimizes MQ coder and simulates and verifies the correctness of design.4. Finally, this thesis summarizes the finished work and experiences, and points out weak points to be improved in the thesis.
